Hello Ombre!

Hi friends! This is Practical Scrapper Ann here and I'm thrilled to share a new trend with you. Ombré is a hot trend in scrapbooking and before I explain what it is, I'd like to say what it is not. Plainly, this trend is not about creating in monochromatic.

On this very colourful layout, I've used the ombré technique several times. According to Merriam-Webster,ombré is having colors or tones that shade into each other. It is a French word meaning “shadow” or “varying shades of a tone”, like a graduation in color. It's showing up in fashion, home decor, hair, nail polish applications, etc.

Ways to achieve this affect on your card, layout or other project, are numerous: use watercolour paints or watercolour crayons and work from light (almost white) to dark in the same colour; work with a distress ink and work with light applications moving to dark, or work with cardstock from the lightest tones of a colour to darker values; use mists and experiment with light to dark applications. On my layout, I applied watercolour paints to create the ombré effect:

You can see words "smile" and "all" are both painted in graduated tones of the same colour.

In this shot, you can see the butterflies are also painted with this technique. I painted the paper first, let it dry, and then punched out the butterflies. If you still are not sure what it is, or how to create it, here are 3 scrap-related articles about this new trend and applying it to your projects:

I hope you'll give this technique a try - it's a great way to add visual interest to your cards and layouts!
