Frugal Finds: Bobby Pins

Welcome back to our monthly installment of frugal finds and do we have a "doosie" for you this month. Back in February when Christine, Erin, and I were trying to come up with what we wanted to do,  I posed bobby pins as an option.  I had just finished giving my five year old daughter an up-do for a "Fancy Nancy" birthday theme party she was going to and inspired me to try to use these in another way.  All thought it sounded interesting and what's even more interesting, are the ideas that we all came up with on how to use them.  A special thanks to design team member Liz for joining in with us!   Hope you enjoy all our bobby pin creations...

Practical Scrapper Erin used Bobby pins with rhinestone butterflies on them to make the bodies of her canvas butterflies. Just slip them over the canvas, and wrap the top pin with yarn or twine.

Practical Scrapper Liz made this simple Thank You card using bobby pins as a design on the puffy hearts. She covered the pins with micro beads and topped them off with a small sequenced flower.

On this layout,  Practical Scrapper Kerri painted her bobby pins white with white acrylic paint.  She then used them to create her journaling lines in the bottom right hand corner of her layout.

Practical Scrapper Kerri was inspired by the layout of this card from her online scrappy friend Cassie D'Ambrosio.  She then decided to add her own twist to Cassie's design my adding some more painted bobby pins and then embellishing them with some dew drops from one of our past sponsors The Robin's Nest.

Frugal Finds: Candy Wrapper Edition

We're taking our inspiration from the recent holiday and using candy wrappers for our frugal finds topic this month.  This one definitely required some thinking out of the box!  Check out these creations!

Practical Scrapper Kerri used her Dum Dums wrappers to create her "lollipops".  She wadded up a tissue and covered it with the wrapper then tied it off with some Martha Stewart baker's twine.  She also used the dum dums wrappers to create the accordion flowers on the ends of her banners.

If you are one of the scrappers who has a hidden stash of chocolate bars in you office then this project is for you!  On this card, Practical Scrapper Kerri used some mini Hershey bar wrappers to embellish her card.  She altered some brads, used the wrapper as a layer of paper in her banner, and created an accordion flower out of them.  What a perfect way to get rid of the evidence-- no one will ever know ;)

Practical Scrapper Carolina used the wrapper that covered a chocolate marshmallow heart (yummy!) to cover the pop up heart she cut with her Silhouette.

 Practical Scrapper Erin used the inserts from this year's Valentines chocolates to create a page. She used embossing folders on two of the hearts, and attached the chocolate liners to the third to create a ruffled edge.

Frugal Finds- Felt Coasters

I love rummaging through my local dollar store looking for fun things to incorporate into my scrapbooking projects. When I began scrapbooking, it was an inexpensive way to build my supplies, and now that I have loads of supplies, it 's a great way to get myself thinking outside the box.

This month's challenge item, felt coasters, were found in the summer section of my local dollar store. I'm sure you could find similar ones in department stores, or party supply stores.

 So how can you incorporate a felt coaster into a scrapbook page? Well the first thing you could do is just cut and use it as a page accent as I did in the layout below. Because these are quite thick, I felt I needed something else with a bit of dimension on my page, so I used a bit of Prima felt, and a foam heart shape.

You can get messy and have a bit of fun as I did here, by using the coasters as masks, and misting Glimmer Mist over them onto a light coloured cardstock to make a custom background.

I also changed the colour of some of the felt by also using Glimmer Mist. ( light green to dark green, light pink to darker pink). Feel free to really cut into them to make fun shapes, and vary the scale. ( Yes that's a silly band on the bottom of the page).

If misting has you a little worried, you can achieve a sunny background like the one on Kerri's page below using the felt as a stamp. Once she was done stamping with the coasters, she stuck them on her page, and topped them with flowers!

But wait- look at the beautiful cards you can make ( said in my best infomercial sales pitch- lol)

Kerri played up the intricate pattern by using pearl accents, and an embossed background for great dimension and texture.

Christine also created a card - backing her coaster with some Authentique paper from the Blissful line.  The paper subtly pops out without overpowering the coaster as the feature.  She also played up the texture of the card adding in bakers twine and mesh.

One Layer Cards

One of my favorite things about Practical Scrappers is that we are a place that embraces and showcases all the different styles of papercrafting that we can find.  I love to look at layouts and cards that are totally not my style, but still an incredible piece of art.  Clean and Simple (CAS) has really been exploding in popularity lately.  Today we're going to be showcasing one layer cards (a card that has no additional layers - everything is attached to the original cardstock).  There are no hard and fast rules on this, just a general guideline.  I think you will enjoy seeing that even in this style of card making - it is not always CAS.  I challenged our designers to really give this one a whirl (this was a first attempt for most of them) and here is some of the cards they came up with.
