In case you haven't noticed, we love kids around here! I regularly involve my older kids in my scrapping, in fact they even have their own little scrap table in my studio. My son absolutely loves to color and journal and he is the inspiration for this article. I asked our designers to have the kids in their life create patterned paper of their own, check out what we came up with!
Christine & Timmy
For our first attempt, I gave Timmy a plain white sheet of 12 X 12 cardstock with a 5 X 7 box drawn on it. I told him he could color anywhere except inside the box because that would get covered. He drew this picture and then I took over from there. I added the picture and a few small embellishments and voila we've got a layout. I love that this shows his talent at this age and will be something we can both look back at and enjoy!
For our second sheet, I gave Timmy a black page that had white polka dots on it. I told him to color it with whatever colors he wanted. The coloring got tedious after awhile so I sat down and helped him. My purpose in having him do this work was not to keep him busy while I worked, but to have something he created to use in my pages. So this gave us some great mom and son time while we worked together to color!
Corinna & Summer
Corinna asked her 10-year-old daughter Summer to make her some patterned paper. She gave her some white cardstock and no instructions, just to do whatever she wanted. (Sometimes she's more of an artiste than her mom!) Summer had a vision for what she wanted, and Corinna had the perfect photo to go with it, but as sometimes happens this final project she presented to Corinna looked nothing like what she originally had planned. So it took a few days to come up with a different photo to use, but it finally happened. Summer started out making a rainbow but then she just got into her art and ended up watering her paint down a bit, loading her paintbrush up with paint, and then flinging it onto her cardstock (propped up on an easel). The only problem with this was the paint landed on the cardstock AND the dining room table, floor, chairs, etc. Summer says she didn't have as much fun with the cleanup as she did with making the paper! Here is the finished layout:
Kim & Ashlea
Last up we have a project created by Kim and her niece Ashlea.
First up she created her patterned paper using acrylic stamps.
When she was happy with her paper, Aunt Kim helped her print and cut a picture and pick out embellishments. Here's what they came up with:
We are going to be featuring ideas for Kreating with Kids each month! If you've got some ideas to share, we would love to hear them. Either leave us a comment here or send us an email at practicalscrappersideas@gmail.com

I love to see kids getting creative...especially in this very technological age when computer games seem to occupy way too much time! These three examples are wonderful...TFS...I have a piece of art my son created at age three, framed & on the wall, which still draws comments from visitors!!!
that is a great idea, my daughter is constantly making something on paper... I have to start incorpotating them into layouts!
I love this idea...my dd is always crafting with me, but I never thought to use this in my layout....TFS
How wonderful to share crafting time with a child- it is so fun.
Great job to everyone for sharing
I absolutly love this idea. I'm going home tonight and have my daughter make background paper. Thank you for the idea.
Great idea! I like to periodically create pages about DS's cretive ways, but have been stumped for quite some time. Looks like it's time to try again.
