Just ask Erin!

Kim

It's that time again folks; to hear from opinionated little ol' me. If you know me, I jump at any opportunity to give my 2 cents, and this feature is all about just that ( and answering your questions too of course!).
Today's question stems from a discussion on our facebook page from  Julie:
"I have sheets of vellum but I don't have much of a clue how to use them. Has anyone got any ideas/tips or examples of what I could try?"
Vellum is one of those materials that is difficult to know how to use, in part due to the question of how to adhere it without visible marks on the layout/card.
Try these tricks:
  • use specialty vellum adhesive- Tombo makes a great one
  • use decorative staples
  • use brads
  • apply adhesive where it will be concealed by other elements.
  • try stitching it on.
When using adhesives, apply them to the cardstock/patterned paper rather than to the vellum directly. You will also need to take care when handling your sheets of vellum, as they will develop white marks where creased. Try these fun applications:
  • dry emboss your vellum for a stunning effect
  • print journaling or titles directly onto vellum ( ink will take much longer to dry)
  • mat your photos on vellum
  • create a frame for a special point of interest in a photo by cutting a "spotlight" hole out and layering over your photo.
  • stamp onto vellum, and cut out to make unique embellishments like butterflies and flowers.
  • layer colored vellum for a great effect.
  • run strips of vellum through an old Dymo label machine to create custom journaling.
  • use decorative edge punches to make subtle lace for your projects. try layering them!
  • make a vellum pocket or envelope for your page or card.
See the Idea Central tab on our blog for more ideas using vellum and transparencies, and to see some of these ideas in action.

Thanks for all the suggestions - I'll have to give it a try now. Note to self - Next LO must include vellum.

Great ideas!

And I know I'm probably partial since I work for them, but I ADORE the Helmar V2 Vellum Spray Adhesive for adhering vellum to my projects. It sprays on kind of opaque so I can see and then turns clear. I need to use more vellum. I'd love to try stamping on it and embossing it more. I am not sure if I even have much in my scrappy stash. Maybe a trip to the store is in order! LOL! :)
