Ten Things You Can Do With Felt ( with a Bonus)!

After nearly 6 weeks of hiatus, it's back!! Ten Things Tuesday has come back in style and this week we are kicking it off for you with ways you can use that felt. And because we were gone for so long, we even through in an added bonus one giving you 11 great ways to use up that felt!
Felt is a hard thing for me to use when it comes my scrapbooking and card making.  For some reason I have a hard time associating it with anything other than puppets--don't laugh!  The ladies really out did themselves and came up with some fabulous felt inspiration-- so much that when I am done with work today, I'll be hitting my Joann's on the way home and picking up some to play with!

1.) Use a Felt Coaster as a Mask
Practical Scrapper Charity used a felt coaster from Michael's as a mask to mist this snow flake onto her cardstock.

2.) Use Felt Shapes as Embellishments
Practical Scrapper Charissa cut hearts out of felt from the craft aisle at Target and stitched them onto her layout as part of her embellishments.

3.) Stamp and Emboss On Your Felt
Practical Scrapper Karen stamped the bird directly on teal felt with
Ranger Perfect Medium and embossed the felt with a heat gun creating a textured webbed look.

4.) Wrap It Up!
Practical Scrapper Claude used older Fancy Pants pieces of felt. She gave them new life by wrapping them in twine.

5.) Die Cut It!
Practical Scrapper Linda made a felt mannequin using felt and a Sizzix die.

6.) All Eyes Are On It!
Practical Scrapper Sarah used felt as a focal point in her layered,  paper pieced tea cup.

7.) Layer It Up!
Practical Scrapper Kelly used felt and a Page Extension by Creek Bank Creations to create a felt banner to match her layout about volleyball.

8.) Cut It and Create 3D Embellishments By Layering!
Practical Scrapper Cathy used Tim Holtz's Sizzix Tattered Flower Die to cut the layered felt flower, backed her negative die cut title with the grey felt and cut a triangle out of felt for the photo corner.

9.) Create A Bucket Full of Posies!
Practical Scrapper Lanette topped some of her favorite pens with cute little felt flowers to encourage her to journal more this year.

10.) Roll It Up To Create Some Rosettes!
Practical Scrapper Lee-Anne handmade all her flowers from felt to embellish her layout.

11.) Felt Pierce It!
Practical Scrapper Kenya used her Spellbinder's Classic Circles and pierced it together to create this cute little snowman card.

Frugal Finds- Felt Coasters

I love rummaging through my local dollar store looking for fun things to incorporate into my scrapbooking projects. When I began scrapbooking, it was an inexpensive way to build my supplies, and now that I have loads of supplies, it 's a great way to get myself thinking outside the box.

This month's challenge item, felt coasters, were found in the summer section of my local dollar store. I'm sure you could find similar ones in department stores, or party supply stores.

So how can you incorporate a felt coaster into a scrapbook page? Well the first thing you could do is just cut and use it as a page accent as I did in the layout below. Because these are quite thick, I felt I needed something else with a bit of dimension on my page, so I used a bit of Prima felt, and a foam heart shape.

You can get messy and have a bit of fun as I did here, by using the coasters as masks, and misting Glimmer Mist over them onto a light coloured cardstock to make a custom background.
I also changed the colour of some of the felt by also using Glimmer Mist. ( light green to dark green, light pink to darker pink). Feel free to really cut into them to make fun shapes, and vary the scale. ( Yes that's a silly band on the bottom of the page).

If misting has you a little worried, you can achieve a sunny background like the one on Kerri's page below using the felt as a stamp. Once she was done stamping with the coasters, she stuck them on her page, and topped them with flowers!

But wait- look at the beautiful cards you can make ( said in my best infomercial sales pitch- lol)

Kerri played up the intricate pattern by using pearl accents, and an embossed background for great dimension and texture.

Christine also created a card - backing her coaster with some Authentique paper from the Blissful line.  The paper subtly pops out without overpowering the coaster as the feature.  She also played up the texture of the card adding in bakers twine and mesh.

Have you ever used repurposed anything from the dollar store on a paper crafting project?

Monday's Felt, Fabric, or Tulle Projects

Kim used the Pup in a Boot image from our sponsor, Wink, Wink Ink. She used the one that is pre-colored. Her flower is about 30 layers of tulle cut with her smallest scalloped circle nesties. She also added just a touch of purple ink to the tulle.

Corinna used tulle rose ribbon from American Crafts' new Dear Lizzy line.

Sasya used three black felt flowers ("Fiesta Felt" from Buttons Galore) to decorate her layout.

Barb used some felt flowers from a Martha Stewart hair accessories kit. She added some paper flowers, glitter, and buttons to dress them up. She also used some flower tirm as the border around her circle. The ruffle is fabric embroidered with butterflies which was topped off with a piece of felt ric-rac.

Denise used a satin-like fabric to make these elegant white flowers. She then adhered a large pink rhinestone to the center.

Deanne used a pink lei she had in her stash for years. She altered the original "flower" shape by cutting them into smaller circles. Because they are an acrylic fabric, they can be "melted" with a heat embossing gun to give it texture and shape. The end result are held together with pearl brads.

Focus: Felt

When I think of felt, I think of Sunday School felt boards and small crafts my mom made when we were little. She is a talented seamstress and, well, I’m not. So after I figured that out, I tried to stay away from fabric. But over the last few years I’ve seen the potential that fabric could have on my pages and I’ve tried a few things. I love depth and texture, so felt should be a material I use. But I was worried about this medium only being appropriate for little girl pages. My experience, and the layouts of so many talented women, proves otherwise.

Not feeling confident about creating my own embellishments for this one, I started looking. I found a felt pumpkin placemat 50% off and immediately knew what I wanted to do with it. Originally the pumpkin was quite a bit wider than this, so I trimmed it down to fit my page. I’m enjoying the texture and the materials I ended up using. When you start using fabric, you might find other new possibilities unfolding.

I think felt embellishments would be great for a mini-book. Used consistently they would make it easy to create unity among pages. Just the little details add so much. Kim S’s page is a great example of this with her corner, border, and heart. So cute. What Katherine did with borders is a great idea – they serve so many purposes here. Circles were all the rage this week, and I especially love Brae and Laurel’s – very different layouts that both utilize felt’s full potential to make a statement. Jenny T’s creative approach reminds us YES we can cut fabric with our die cut machines, so now what’s your excuse? J

Now that I’ve seen the potential of felt, I can’t stop with these great examples! I can’t resist pointing out Craftalicious Caper’s submission to this week’s challenge. These details are fantastic! I stumbled across the fabric queen Tinia Willis. Check out her creative ideas and sweet card here.

Felt frames, felt books – you can do about anything with this stuff. Of course, these aren’t really new ideas. Felt has been a favorite for decades. And it makes sense that a nostalgic hobby like scrapbooking would find a place for it. If you don’t have felt in your stash already, this is one week when I’m going to say – go get some! And if you do, let these designers inspire you. Enjoy your supplies!
