Christmas Tree Cards 4 ways!

Hi there! Practical Scrapper Patty here to share a collection of Christmas cards I created.  I was at my local Archiver's when I stumbled across a collection of papers from the Theresa Collins Spring Fling collection.  The first thing that came to mind was these would be perfect for Christmas cards.  Weird, Right?  But even in a spring collection, there can be great colors to work with for any season!
Once I had the papers I knew I had to make several different cards from this collection.  I used a tree as my centerpiece for each one but created the look of each in a different way.
This tree was created using strips of glittered swirl border and red eyelets as decorations on the tree.  The tree topper is a simple piece of green tulle tied with a piece of red satin ribbon.

This tree was created with sequins.  I began with a row of 10 green and decreased by one each row above.  I added red, blue and purple sequins to look like ornaments.  The star at the top is a stick pin which I removed the pin from.  I layered loops of ribbon at the bottom to create the pretty bow with Christmas sentiments on it.

This tree is simply cut from patterned paper and sequins were added as decorations.  I tied a piece of twine at the top and created a banner also by hand cutting from patterned paper.  The sentiment was printed on twill tape ribbon.

Last but not least, This card is my Favorite!  The trees are super simple triangles with sequins and a star pin for toppers but what really makes this card stand out for me is the layers of snow created from layers of vellum. It gives it such a soft and whimsical look!  I used coordinating washi tape around the whole edge of the card to hold the vellum in place.

Have fun creating your Christmas cards this year!

Holiday Mittens

Good morning! Nicole Laha here, getting ready for Christmas with a cozy card to share! I live in Wisconsin where the cold temperatures have forced us to bundle up with hats, scarves, and mittens! Life has truly inspired art today...

The mittens, from Stamps by Judith, were stamped on three different patterns from BasicGrey's 25th & Pine Collection. It has quickly become my favorite holiday collection this year. With such gorgeous patterned papers, paper piecing my projects trumps coloring! After stamping the images, I cut and layered the three pieces of the mitten together.

I stamped a holiday greeting onto a white banner and popped it up with foam risers. But not before stringing some yellow baker's twine around it. The ends of the twine were adhere with washi tape to the back of the mittens.

Thanks for stopping by Practical Scrappers today! I hope you're staying warm and crafting the day away!

A Simple and Not-so- Simple Christmas Card with Video

Hi everyone! Practical Scrapper Alison Day here sharing a couple of Christmas cards I whipped up this morning for you. I had intended to create several simple cards but ... I got kind of carried away with one of them and it turned out to be not so simple!!

Ah well, it happens. Right?

I decided to film a video showing you my process on the simpler card as well as giving you an overview of what went into the more complicated card. You can check it out below. Both use supplies I already had on hand - something I am an advocate for. Don't get me wrong, I love to shop for new supplies but re-loving those older supplies is just as important!

Enjoy the video and then scroll down to see close up shots of each card.

Thank you. Hope I've inspired you today!

Snow Globe Card

Hi Everyone!

This is the most wonderful time of the year! Thanksgiving was awesome and Christmas is right around the corner. Each year, I make at least one snow globe/shaker card for Christmas. The reason why I only make one is because the process is very time consuming. I had to cut up foam tape and layer it and ensure the tape was not showing under the transparency…while the outcome was lovely, I would be beat! Honestly, I was not looking forward to my annual undertaking.

A few months back, Practical Scrappers had the Frugal Finds: Jar Lids. I would save lids and other things without a real reason other than, “I will use this for something later.” As I looked through the wonderful projects that day, I saw Charity’s shaker card! It clicked! I have been doing the snow globe card ALL WRONG! So thank you PS for the Frugal Finds and thank you Charity for being the inspiration for this card J Check out Charity’s blog for her instructions.

The first thing I did was use sandpaper for the jar lid and painted it with Gesso. Once the Gesso dried, I painted the lid (outer rim and inside) with two coats of gold paint.

As that dried, I used the Cricut Craft Room to design the snow globe. I used the Joys of the Season Cricut cartridge for the globe shape. I welded two of them together and cut three individual shapes; two for stability and one for the sentiment.

I also designed the focal image from the Santa’s Village Cricut cartridge in CCR. I used my largest Classic Circle Spellbinders Die to cut the image out as well as a piece of transparency. I added the decorative sand and a few snowflakes (cut from a border punch by Fiskars).

I placed the transparency on top and used a little adhesive to hold the transparency and sand in place. To adhere the “globe” I used hot glue. Embellish as you wish!

I hope you enjoyed today’s project! Thanks for stopping by, Kenya~

Frugal Finds: Leftovers from Christmas

Christine, Carolina, and Cathy are back today with a frugal finds feature on using some leftovers from Christmas.  Dig thru that stash of yours, you never know what you might come up with!
Practical Scrapper Christine decided to play with tinsel and see what she could come up with.  She laid down a whole bunch of tacky glue on her heart and then laid rows of tinsel down.  Afterwards she trimmed the edges.  She also found there were spots she had to give it a haircut :) to make it all lay correctly.

This year I decided to make Christmas jammies for the whole family, but I only started sewing a month ago, so I bought WAYYYYYYY too much fabric. Enough to make not only jammies but cushion covers, banners, and now create fabric hearts for my layout (the brownish hearts are made from Santa's beard!!!).

I picked up a box of these snowflake ornaments last year, a box of 12 for a $1.00.  They are super light weight, thin and glittery...perfect for all types of paper crafting!

Another tinsel card from Christine...she tried out just layering it at the bottom of the card.

Dec. 19th- Repurposing: Quick & Easy Last-Minute Christmas Cards

As a crafter, I am also a hoarder. I'm sure many of you can relate! Every year my family buys or makes adorable gift tags to adorn our Christmas packages. Some of them are so cute I can't bear to throw them away...I just know I'll be able to use them for something someday.

Over the years I've collected quite a stash. So this is the year I decided to do something with them...repurpose them into Christmas cards! If you don't save your tags from previous years, you can use the extras from this year that you aren't using for packages.

With a little patterned paper and some stamps, I created this card in under 10 minutes. If you get an assembly line going you could make them even faster! By leaving your card background white and using just a little paper, you are also keeping the cost down by repurposing!

Do you make your own Christmas cards? What tricks can you share to make them quick & easy but still beautiful?

Happy crafting,
Jayma

Our designer Audrey was chosen to do some designing for Little Yellow Bicycle.  I was so "wowed" by what she did I asked her if we could share some of them here!  She worked with the "Wonder & Wishes" line.

A fantastically talented designer combined with a fabulous Christmas line...awesome combination isn't it!?!  Thanks for sharing with us Audrey!

December 5th - Christmas Cards from Scraps

Today I want to show you some very easy ways to create Christmas cards from your scraps! Maybe you have been recreating some of the amazing projects you’ve seen here and have some leftovers, or maybe you just have scraps from Christmases past. Either way, I am going to show you how to use up large, medium, and small scraps with some easy card recipes. I purposely kept these cards simple as most of us have very little time during the holiday season, so here goes!
For your ingredients (i.e. supplies) use whatever you have on hand. Here is what I used:
Paper scraps-Echo Park’s Season’s Greetings (this is my favorite Christmas collection ever-just love it)
Stickers-Echo Park Season’s Greetings (Naughty and Nice), SRM (Merry Christmas)
Twine-For the Luv of Art
Gems-My Mind’s Eye (colored), Kaiser (clear)
Stickles-Ranger
Large Scrap Recipe
As with all my recipes, I just grabbed up a handful of leftovers paper scraps from other projects and put them on my desk. Here are the large scraps I had to work with:
I decided the circle would make a great ornament, and mixed the ingredients together to create my card.
Happy Christmas Card
Directions:
Step 1: Layer the patterned paper onto the cardstock, and attach to cream card base-leaving about a quarter inch of cream card base showing at the spine. Round top and bottom corner.
Step 2: Adhere circle. Just above the circle, pierce a hole through all layers.
Step 3: Using a piece of twine, wrap from the inside of the card up over the front of the card, and through the hole above the ornament. Tie ends together on the inside of the card. This will create your ornament string.
Step 4: Cut a small scrap of paper and adhere to the top of your ornament. This will hide the hole, and create a finished ornament. Add stickles if desired.
Step 5: Add sentiment. I used a scrap from a journaling card sheet and half of a Merry Christmas sticker.
Step 6: Loop more twine around the spine of the card and tie on the inside. Then create a bow out of twine and adhere it to the string of your ornament. I used glossy accents.
Medium Scrap Recipe: This one looks a little complicated, but it is pretty easy-trust me! :)
Naughty or Nice Card
Directions:
To create the present:
Step 1: Put two scraps (a square shape, and a rectangle shape that is a little longer than the square) together to create the present. Mount onto a scrap of black cardstock, and trim to create a small black mat behind the present.
Step 2: Punch a small scalloped border strip and adhere to the present. Add stickles.
Step 3: Create a bow out of twine and adhere to present. I used glossy accents.
Step 4: Mount a sticker using dimensional adhesive.
TIP: For my small border strip on this card, and for the top of my ornament on my previous card, I used the pattern from the strip that comes attached to the bottom of a piece of double-sided patterned paper-the part that shows you what the pattern is on the other side. These can make great extra scraps and borders, so don’t throw them away! :)
To create the background:
This LOOKS like a lot of paper piecing, but is another easy tip. I used the index sheet that comes with a paper pack-the piece that comes in the front, and shows you all of the designs that come in the pack. This is a GREAT way to get the look of piecing, without any of the work.

To finish the card, just mount onto scrap cardstock, and then the card base.
Small Scrap Recipe : For this card, I used a lot of little scraps (doesn’t look like much, does it?):
Merry Christmas Tree Card
Directions:
Step 1: Trim scraps to thin strips in varying thicknesses. Arrange one on top of the other to get a pattern you like. Then trim strips leaving the longest at the bottom, and each strip above it getting gradually shorter. This will leave you with a basic triangle, or tree shape of strips. I included part of a journaling card as one of my strips, but you can use whatever you want-get creative! :)
Step 2: Adhere strips to cardstock. Adhere to another piece of cardstock, then adhere to card base.
Step 3: Add gems and sticker. I used the Merry from the Merry Christmas sticker I used in the first card.
Finally, to give you a totally different look, I made another card using the Echo Park Season’s Greetings collection. For this card, I used part of a page of border strips. I cut the border strip into three sections. I adhered the pieces one on top of the other to a black card base-leaving a little space in between each piece so the black cardstock showed through. I added some gems, and that’s it. You could make several cute cards from just one sheet of border strips, so if you are looking for an idea for some quick Christmas cards, this might be the way to go!
So, there you have it-some easy ways to use up those Christmas paper scraps! Hope you enjoyed, and feel free to check out my blog for more Christmas card ideas!
